The Bedlam Stacks, As Kingfishers Catch Fire, Homegoing, Lost Words, Ravilious & co, and Tangleweed and Brine in running for ‘Beautiful Book’ award.
Bookshops have chosen the six most beautifully designed books published in the past year, unveiled as part of the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards.
The shortlist includes:
As Kingfishers Catch Fire (Little Brown) by Alex Preston & Neil Gower – illustrations by Neil Gower, book jacket designer Nico Taylor
The Bedlam Stacks (Bloomsbury) by Natasha Pulley – designer David Mann
Homegoing (PRH) by Yaa Gyasi – Designer Nathan Burton
Lost Words (PRH) by Robert Macfarlane & Jackie Morris - illustration by Jackie Morris, book jacket was a collaborate effort by the PRH art team
Ravilious & Co (Thames & Hudson) by Andy Friend – book jacket designed by Lisa Ifsits
Tangleweed and Brine (Little Island) by Deirdre Sullivan - Art Directed and managed by Gráinne Clear; illustrations by Karen Vaughan
Alan Staton, Head of Marketing & Communications, Booksellers Association, said: “Books Are My Bag is, at its heart, a celebration of physical books and physical bookshops. Production values have never been higher and books have never been more covetable as objects of desire. This shortlist comprises six books that booksellers themselves cherish.”
The Beautiful Book shortlist was voted for by bookshops across the UK and Ireland. The overall winner will be chosen by bookshops and announced at the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards on Tuesday 21st November at Foyles Charring Cross Road, London.
The Books Are My Bag Readers Awards, supported by National Book Tokens, are the only book award curated by bookshops, with categories including Popular Fiction, Novel, Non-Fiction, Young Adult (age 12-18), Middle Grade (age 7-11), and Breakthrough Author.
To qualify for the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards, books must have been published in hardback or paperback between 1st January 2017 and 30th October 2017.
Breakthrough Authors are those who have achieved significant breakthrough in 2017. They don’t have to be debut writers, and their books don’t have to have been published in 2017.
